We love the festive season in Shrewsbury! From our twinkling lights, to Christmas Markets in The Square, late night shopping, one of the best pantos in the UK, and world-class music, there are so many reasons to feel proud of our beautiful town. 

St Chad's Christmas Tree Festival

From December 10 to early Jan, 2023.

Shrewsbury’s civic church will be ablaze with twinkling lights this December when a host of beautifully decorated and illuminated Christmas trees fill St. Chad’s for the opening of its annual Christmas Tree Festival. 

An ongoing programme of music and events will include a free concert by Holly Teague (soprano) on December 17 at 11am, followed by Footlights Dance School in the afternoon. December 18 is the popular nine lessons and carols and the nativity service is on December 24. Keep an eye on the church website for updates.

Shrewsbury Christmas Lights Switch On

Wednesday, November 23, 4.30pm - 8pm

Music and activities across the town will be returning, with activities starting from 4.30pm and the lights switch on at 6.30pm - the event marks the start of late night shopping in the town and the launch of the Christmas lights display.

Visit Santa’s Grotto

Meet Father Christmas in his museum workshop at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, surrounded by traditional toys and festive objects. Find your name in his antique ledger to receive an early gift! 
And over at Shrewsbury Shopping Centres, watch out for the roaming Santa as you shop!

You can also catch Santa at Dobbies Garden Centre, Love2Stay, Park Hall Farm, Hoo Zoo, Hawkstone Park Follies, Weston park (Enchanted Weston) and at Sunnycroft NT house in Wellington.

Late Night Shopping

Late night shopping in Shrewsbury begins after the lights switch-on, this Wednesday, November 23, with multiple dates in the run-up to December 25:

  • November 23 (to coincide with the lights switch on) - 9am to 9pm 
  • Wednesdays November 30, December 7, 14 & 21 - 9am to 8pm
  • December 19 & 20, 22 & 23 - 9am - 7pm
  • Saturday, December 24 - 9am - 5.30pm
  • December 26 & 27 - 10am = 5pm

Winter Warmers at Shrewsbury Market Hall

The Market Hall will be running its late night 'Winter Warmer Wednesdays' every Wednesday from November 23 to December 14, when you'll be able to shop, eat and drink until 8pm. Look out for surprise appearances from Disney characters! These include November 23 & 30 and December 7 & 14. 

And the last Saturday Late Night of the year at the Market Hall is on December 3, with the market open until 10pm for eating and shopping. 

Pick up a voucher for a free mince pie and glass of mulled wine (while stocks last) with any purchase from a market retail stall.

Carol Concert at Shrewsbury Abbey

Christmas at Attingham Park

Saturday 3 December to Monday 2 January.

Step inside the mansion and see it dressed for Christmas or follow the new Christmas Tree Trail and spot the decorated sleigh along the Mile Walk: a great place for a selfie!

Christmas Tree Trail packs are available from visitor reception which include a guided route around the trees and some extra tree challenges. Packs cost £3 and contain a trail map, colouring pencils and a wooden mini-Christmas tree kit.

Come and celebrate Christmas in Shrewsbury at the annual Carols in the Square concert. The event will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Shropshire.

Under the twinkling lights of The Square, or in the spectacular surroundings of St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury’s Christmas markets are a joy to behold!

The Farmers’ Market will return with a Winter Fair in The Square on November 19, Made in Shropshire will be in The Square on November 12 and December 10 and there’s a Festive Gift Market at St Mary’s on December 10 & 11 too. Or, why not start early with the Winter Fair at St Mary’s on November 5 & 12.

Shrewsbury Christmas Card Shop

The popular annual charity Christmas card shop, run by volunteers, is open from Monday to Saturday in St Mary’s Church until December 10, from 10.15am to 4pm. 

It’ll also open during special events in the church this year too. 

Cards and calendars will be sold on behalf of 35 local and national charities.
