The Phoenix Singers and children from Coleham School present an evening of Christmas music with readings and audience carols at St Alkmund’s Church on 15th Dec.
The Phoenix Singers of Shrewsbury, and children from Coleham School, will present an evening of Christmas music with readings and audience carols, at St Alkmund’s in Shrewsbury on 15th December at 6pm.
'O Magnum Mysterium' will follow their recent highly acclaimed success - “In Paradisum” - at St Chad’s church on 18th November. Widely respected musician and former Director of Music at Shrewsbury School, John Moore, wrote of that concert “Shropshire is blessed with many fine choral organisations, but possibly none finer than the well-established Phoenix Singers of Shrewsbury, who performed a wonderful programme under their recently appointed conductor, David Thomas, accompanied by Tony Pinel on the very fine St Chad’s organ.
“The programme opened with Francis Poulenc’s Four Christmas Motets, which also contained the first of the evening’s two settings of the text, O Magnum Mysterium. This was a fine performance of some sublime repertoire, with all sections of the choir showing great sensitivity in bringing the contrasting texts to life.”
The first of the Poulenc Motets will form part of the choir’s performance at St Alkmund’s, along with three other settings of the same words, including a firm choral favourite for the Christmas season by Morten Lauridsen. These will be interspersed with well known and well loved carols, two readings, and music from the children’s choir.
If the concert in November is anything to go by this should be a wonderful evening of music - to be enjoyed by young and old alike. As John Moore said in his review of that concert “this was a wonderful evening of glorious choral repertoire delivered to a very high standard by singers who are passionate and proud of what they do, and Shrewsbury can be very proud of them as well. David Thomas can be pleased with what he has achieved in his first term with the choir. The rest of their season looks a box of delights”.
