My Shrewsbury Guide to Summer Holiday Fun - Need to Book the Kids In?!
We have done a deep trawl of holiday clubs, activities and events in Shrewsbury over the summer, to give you ideas for entertaining the family.
From Holiday Clubs to Family-friendly events, to places to go - it's all in here!

CLUBS

Shropshire Council is working with local schools, voluntary and community organisations and childcare providers to run an exciting holiday programme this summer. Shropshire HAF (Holiday Activities and Food)

Choose from a wide range of activities for ages five to 16, from sports clubs and forest schools to theatre, dance and digital media. There are free places available for children and young people who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals - Paid-for places are available too.

Shropshire Youth Theatre presents The Summer Sessions: Beginners

Join Shropshire Youth Theatre as they make their way back to The Hive for a series of drama workshops to inspire creativity and give you a place to play. Junior sessions will offer 9-12-year-olds skills in character building, improv comedy, devised performance and drama techniques.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen's witty and romantic masterpiece is one of the best-loved stories of all time, dealing with the most important questions in life.

The Shrewsbury Comics Trail launches on Saturday, July 24th from 10 am at Shrewsbury Library (FREE)

Meet nine of the world's best comic artists, as they reveal nine life-sized billboards and one giant comic strip, telling a story across our beautiful town.

Don't miss this fun day of signings, sketching photo opportunities and workshops. Meet two of Shrewsbury's own artists: Walking Dead and X-Files artist Charlie Adlard and Captain America and Swamp Thing artist Mike Perkins.

Also attending is Manga Artist Sonia Leong, who is delivering manga workshops for kids (SOLD OUT), Beano and Marvel artist Kev F Sutherland, who is hosting his famous Comic Art Masterclass and last but not least legendary writer and co-creator of Judge Dredd John Wagner who wrote the trail story.

You can be part of the occasion too if want to cosplay as your favourite comic character and create your own story by taking selfies in front of the billboards, inserting yourself into the story and sharing on social media using hashtag #comicstrail2021
The most inventive selfie stories will win special prizes, including a free boat trip on the Sabrina and exclusive signed prints from the artists on the trail

Animal Stories and Songs

Family-friendly Animal stories and songs with local storytellers Sal Tonge and Stephanie Kelly. They will set up camp on the grounds of St Alkmunds Church delighting with songs and stories inspired by animals.

Battle of Shrewsbury Medieval Weekend
Saturday, 24 July - Sunday, July 25, 10 am - 4 pm

You will travel back to medieval Shropshire to see the sights and sounds of every life leading up to the battle during this great family day out. You will get to see knights in armour and archers preparing for battle, living history including traditional crafts and cookery, plus many activities to try your hand at throughout the day. Each day will end with the Battle of Shrewsbury where you can choose sides of the rebel army or the king himself.

Summer Fete and Dog Show

Join them for a Fun-filled Day for the Summer Fete and Inaugural Abbey Dog Show with stalls, a bouncy castle, face painting, china smash shy, giant bubbles, raffle, tombola, cake stalls, gingerbread decorating, crafts and books. Best Cat photo judging is at 11 am, registration for the Dog Show is at 11:30 am and the Dog Show judging takes place at 12 pm.

Dinosaurs will be added to the usual livestock found at the farm attraction, as well as a fossil digging area, dinosaur training and hilarious dino races made possible by their sporting farm team.

A Mile of Smiles will bring some long-awaited fun to Shrewsbury. The town will be filled with live music, poetry, circus acts, bubbles, and lots of lovely performers who are tasked with generating smiles! The event will start from Shrewsbury Castle and end at the Quarry where local acts, theatre groups, and musicians will be performing on a live stage.

Interactive Animal Experience with Corner Exotics

As part of the Library’s Summer Reading Challenge, Wild World Heroes, Corner Exotics will be leading an outdoor interactive animal experience for the library at Shrewsbury Castle. Life Shed Forest Camps

This camp is run by their fully trained and highly experienced forest school leaders – all skilled in using the great outdoors to bring out the best in young people. Their camps provide a safe and supportive environment for children to explore the wild and at the same time learn new things about themselves.

Three camps are available during August, each one three days long. Camps run from 9.30 am – 3 pm (Transport leaves Shrewsbury at 9 am and will return to Shrewsbury for 3.30 pick up) Everyone is welcome – no experience needed.

Designed to be as much fun for adults as children, Big Fish Little Fish is social, creative, anarchic, daft and a lot of fun for all! DJ CAP78 brings the tunes to the multisensory dancefloor with club visuals, glitter cannon, bubbles, giant bouncy balloons, all topped off with the famous parachute dance.
Children can get busy in the craft area, be artistic on the giant colouring mural, and be creative at the playdoh table. There is also a baby safe space with soft mats, a ball pool and inflatables, and a toddler play area with tents and tunnels. Fancy Dress theme is Pirates & Mermaids – optional but very much encouraged!

Jembe Drumming Workshop

The sound of Jembe Drums will carry a West African rhythm to the Market Square. Local musicians Jonathan Bannister and Josh Arrowsmith will deliver a lively drumming workshop. No previous experience is necessary just a willingness to have a go.

Because of COVID-19 this year’s Shrewsbury Flower Show has been cancelled and it was decided that it would be a nice idea to hold a ‘virtual’ show instead.
The show will run on the Shrewsbury Flower Show website. Keep an eye on their social media to find out more about gardening competitions and other ways that you can get involved.

Self Help Africa has been cooking up a new foodie event, to ease us out of lockdown! The Shrewsbury-based charity, known for their popular Secret Supper events, will be hosting the first Chews’bury Trail.
Chews’bury is a self-guided food and drinks trail around Shrewsbury town centre with six pit-stops at independent eateries along the way, for a take-out ‘taste’ of the very best they have to offer - including a coffee, cake, savoury snack & more!
