GoCompare Singer to Compere Concert
24 Nov 2022

Wynne Evans will return to compere and perform at Shrewsbury Choral's Christmas Concert this December 10th in Shrewsbury Abbey - he's a world-class opera singer, but you might also recognise him as the GoCompare Man!

Acclaimed opera singer Wynne Evans, principal tenor with Welsh National Opera will once again lead the singing as compere for Shrewsbury Choral’s Christmas Concert in Shrewsbury Abbey this year, on Saturday, December 10.

Wynne became a household name for his role as the spoof opera star Gio Compario in the TV advertising campaign for GoCompare, but unlike the fictional Welsh tenor, Wynne he has a very serious opera singing career of his own - working at the Royal Opera House, Paris Opera and Metropolitan Opera in New York throughout his 25-year career.

His debut album 'A Song in My Heart' reached Number 1 in the classical charts in its first week of release in 2011. Wynne is also a regular presenter on BBC Radio Wales and in 2019, he starred in his own TV series on BBC One 'Wynne At the Deep End' which saw him try to master the skills others have spent a lifetime perfecting.

A the Shrewsbury Choral Christmas Concert this December, the opera star will be singing solos with a live orchestra and with massed choirs from Meole Brace School, Prestfelde School and Shrewsbury Abbey, as well as entertaining the audience with personal anecdotes.

Wearing his festive outfits, Wynne will perform solos to include: 'Let it Snow, Let it Snow!', 'White Christmas' and 'O Holy Night'.

Thelma Foster, Chairman of Shrewsbury Choral said: “Following last Christmas’ sellout extravaganza, Wynne Evans, known as the incomparable ‘GoCompare Man’ makes his return to Shrewsbury.  Don't miss out on this festive fun for all the family!"

The programme will include well-known Christmas music for the orchestra such as composer Leroy Anderson’s famous 'Sleigh Ride' and dances from Tchaikovsky’s 'Nutcracker Suite'. Peter Athans, a versatile professional trumpet player, is also bringing the Athans Brass Ensemble to the concert.

There will be special Christmas songs from Shrewsbury Choral and the school choirs as well as massed singing for the audience.

"So if you want to sing some of your favourite Christmas songs, like The Twelve Days of Christmas, or O Come all ye faithful, or you just want Christmas music to flood over you, this a concert not to be missed!” Thelma added.
