Get Involved!

Beat the January Blues by taking up a new hobby, or involving yourself with community groups (virtual or real), activities or volunteering. There are loads of options in Shrewsbury, but here’s a few ideas you might not have thought of.

Shropshire Bluetits

The popularity of cold water swimming has soared over the past two years. This wonderful local Facebook group now has almost 2,000 members and gives good tips and advice on where to swim outdoors in Shropshire and a lot of safety information. If you haven’t yet heard of Simpsons Pool then you’re probably not a Bluetit!

Men Walking & Talking

Started by Shrewsbury chap Daniel Reid, this is another Facebook group that has caught on during the lockdowns. It’s a chance for men to meet other men and talk! Now in Stourport-On-Severn, Telford, Worcester, Newtown and Oswestry, as well as Shrewsbury.

Dan says: “If anyone is out there feeling lonely and lost right now then please reach out. I am not saying by any stretch that a walk will solve everything but the conversation might just help to lift some of the heaviness even if it is just for an hour.”

For the Love of Shrewsbury

Most people already know about this super popular Facebook group with over 30K members, but if you're newly arrived in town, or have been asleep for a decade, you might not have stumbled upon it! It's a wonderful virtual space to share photographs and historical titbits, with a lovely sense of community. The brilliant admin Lorraine Fletcher selects a picture of the week, posted at the top of the site – with many great local photographers to choose from, it’s always a beautiful shot. Volunteer at Shrewsbury Food Hub

Anyone who has used the foodshare tables across town this festive season will appreciate the great sense of camaraderie among the volunteers at Shrewsbury Food Hub. There are many roles to fill, from helping out at the foodshares, or driving and packing delivery vans. The volunteers were awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in June 2021. Send a message to pippa@shrewsburyfoodhub.org.uk to register an interest in volunteering.

The Shrewsbury Pickleball Club

Have a go at the fastest growing sport in the USA - ‘pickleball’ - now at The Shrewsbury Pickleball Club, based at the sports village in Harlescott. It’s fun, sociable and you can play indoors or outdoors. Pickleball is a mixture of table tennis, tennis and badminton but much easier to pick up (apparently!).

Join the Shrewsbury Old Canal Route Facebook group to find out how you can help restore this path, which will ultimately connect to the Newport Canal, linking Shrewsbury to the main canal network, a few miles from the World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Shropshire Union Canal.

From Shrewsbury the path currently stops when it reaches Uffington, but work is underway to extend this to Attingham Park and beyond.

Visit www.sncanal.org.uk to learn more about the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust.

You can work up a sweat helping to restore the old Shrewsbury canal to its former glory in the wonderfully ventilated and healthy outdoors. Volunteering is now expanded to two Saturdays a month (1st and last). Midweek places available too. Please email peter.f.cann@gmail.com if you are interested.

Start a New Job!

Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin’s Help at Home Service is looking for Home Support Workers to help provide regular support to older people who live in your area. You’ll be required to commit to 10 hours per week, travelling within your local area to visit an older person in their home. The deadline for applications is January 31.
