There are Open Gardens this weekend (July 2nd) in Much Wenlock including a variety of town and cottage gardens and a chance to see historic Wenlock Abbey House (pictured) - in aid of the Shropshire Historic Churches Trust.
There’s a rare chance to see the beautiful gardens at Wenlock Abbey House this Sunday as part of the Much Wenlock Open Gardens event in aid of Shropshire Historic Churches Trust.
The private house comprises a Grade I medieval complex, including a 12th century infirmary and late 1420s Prior’s Lodgings of Wenlock Priory. It has been in private ownership since the Dissolution in 1540 and has been substantially renovated by artist-philosopher Louis de Wet as a place of study.
Ordinarily, we're only afforded a tantalising glimpse of this architectural jewel from the adjoining English Heritage site of Much Wenlock Priory, but this is a chance to see it up close as well as enjoying its beautiful front gardens.
Some of the other gardens in the trail are new this year and all are inspiring and beautiful. One reputedly has the oldest Perry cider pear tree in Wenlock, - possibly the county. Take your time between 12pm and 5pm to wander around this lovely little old town enjoying some of its beautiful and varied gardens and do stop at the 12th century church of Holy Trinity, where hot and cold drinks with delicious cakes will be served.
Map tickets will be for sale at the Penny Farthing shop in the Square. Tickets £6 cash. Teas will be served in the church and there are public WCs marked on the map, plus one in the church. Plants, books and jigsaws will also be on sale.
Some gardens are wheelchair accessible and where there are steps, many features can be seen from the main garden. Most gardens permit dogs on leads (this will be stated on the map where not possible). There are 4 signed car parks in town plus street parking.
