Shrewsbury Secret Artist Sale Attracts Celebrity Interest
29 Mar 2023

The Shrewsbury Secret Artist Sale is making a come back this summer (August 20th) at The Soden Collection on Wyle Cop and is set to raise thousands for charity.

Last year's Shrewsbury Secret Artist Sale saw people queuing around the block and even sleeping overnight on Wyle Cop to reserve their pick of the 'secret' artists. The inaugural event at The Soden Collection raised almost £9,000 for charity.

It's back on August 20th this year and organisers say they hope to tip the £10,000 mark - with people paying £50 each for hundreds of original pieces of work from local, national and international artists. It's rumoured that a 'national celebrity' has also promised to donate a piece of work! If you know of any other high profile or famous people who might like to donate work for this great cause, the organisers would love to hear from you.

The unique sale sees people invited into the gallery to browse the A5 pieces of work, only all of the artists' names are kept secret, with signatures on the reverse. So you may actually be buying a major international artist for your £50! Whichever way, you'll have picked up something you like and something that speaks to you, so it's a win win for customers.

As Jonathan Soden explains: “The artist’s identity remains unknown until the work is purchased, which means buyers have the opportunity to acquire outstanding artwork at a fraction of the usual cost.”

All proceeds go to five causes: Breast Cancer Now, Lingen Davies Cancer Appeal, Alzheimer's Society, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Severn Hospice.

The event is sponsored by Halls estate agents and auctioneers this year: "We're delighted to have Halls on board - this means we can promote the event to a wider audience and hopefully raise even more money for charity," Jonathan adds. "Especially as we'll be adding new features this year."

Allen Gittens, from Halls, said: “As the county’s leading fine art auctioneers, Halls are always keen to support the local arts community wherever possible. This innovative event provides a valuable opportunity for Shropshire artists and those from further afield to showcase their work to potential buyers and collectors and has the added bonus of raising much needed funds for very worthwhile local and national charities.

“We are sure that after last year’s hugely successful launch, the event will be even bigger and better this year.”
