Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra: Film Classics at The Castle
04 Jul 2023

The Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra picnic concerts at the Castle are now a firm favourite of the summer season - but you'll have to be quick to book for this year's concert on Wednesday, July 12th at 7pm. Pictures by Andy Bell Photography.

Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra concerts at Shrewsbury castle have become a major highlight in the annual calendar - with the sun setting above the walls and the assembled families enjoying picnics on the lawn, they are a joy to experience and a lovely, not-too-serious introduction to classical music.

Last year's concert was in aid of Shropshire Supports Refugees and saw Ukrainian refugees joining the instrumentalists, along with a Ukrainian choir in a moving rendition of the Ukrainian national anthem.

This year, the programme of film classics should be a popular choice, including: Pirates of the Caribbean, The Thunderbirds March, John Williams' fabulous score to Jurassic Park, Elmer Bernstein's The Magnificent Seven, the fabulous Bishop Rock overture by Doreen Carwithen, Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar, Finlandia by Sibelius, the march from Raiders of the Lost Ark by John Williams - and the overture and one of the Entr'actes to Carmen

Conductor John Moore said: "We are delighted to be returning to Shrewsbury Castle where, for two years, we have been thrilled with the support from the town and from further afield for these very special summer concerts.

"We hope you will enjoying hearing some well known, favourite tunes and the chance to sing along with some rousing choruses. We are keeping prices deliberately low so the whole family can come along. Bring picnics and chairs and bring the family to make an evening of it. The evening will be no more than 90 minutes long, so very suitable for children of all ages, and a lovely introduction to classical and film music."

In event of inclement weather, the concert will not take place (stringed instruments tend to fill up with rain!) - refunds will be available. All proceeds from the concert will go to Shrewsbury Ark and there will be opportunities to make donations on the night.

The Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra summer concert at Shrewsbury Castle is on Wednesday, July 12th at 7pm. Tickets cost £5 for adults (children & full time students and carers £1) BOOK HERE
