Lunchtime Concerts in the Round at St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury see nearly 50 concerts take place every year, on Fridays from February to Christmas. Organiser Richard Walker gives a flavour of concerts for 2023.
Concerts in the Round at St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury is one of the biggest such concert series in the country. Every year nearly 50 concerts take place, every Friday from February to Christmas (with no concert on Good Friday).
Concerts begin at 12.30pm and usually end at about 1.10pm. They are free, and there is lunch afterwards in the church hall, where you can chat to the performers – and other audience members.
The line-up for 2023 includes concerts by students at the world-famous Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, together with presentations by pupils of The Old Hall Wellington, Packwood Haugh and Shrewsbury School. There are recitals by leading cathedral organists, professional musicians, local amateurs and students.
All the concerts are worth attending (and some of the audience have a 100% attendance record) – but look out especially for Gina Taylor – a young harpist who is a regular contributor to our series (July 21st); also Ulrich Heinen, former Principal Cello at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (September 29th) and Yunqing Jiang – a student soprano at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (March 31st).
The series begins with an organ recital by Carleton Etherington – Director of Music at Tewkesbury Abbey – on February 3rd. All the recitals will be listed in My Shrewsbury, and the My Shrewsbury website.
