Touring and Adventure Travel Showcase Returns
22 Sep 2023

Peakes Travel Elite is bringing back its popular luxury travel showcase event to St Mary's Church in Shrewsbury on Sunday, October 15th, 2023 from 10am to 2pm. We spoke to Managing Director Claire Moore to find out what it's all about.

If you’re questing for the next big holiday adventure you’ll want to pop in to St Mary’s Church this October 15.

Peakes Travel Elite is bringing back its popular luxury travel showcase event - and with everything from tall ships and river cruising, to skeleton coast tours in Namibia on offer from some of the best independent tour operators in the UK, it’s a great way to start planning.

Booking holidays online, it can be hard to cut through the noise of advertorial overhype, influencer gloss and paid-for, or dodgy reviews.

With around 14 operators due to attend the Shrewsbury travel showcase, it’s a chance to sit down and talk through ideas and itineraries and seek advice directly from the experts. These guys have done all the research for you; they are all carefully selected operators working with Peakes Travel Elite, the independent and multi-award-winning travel agency based in Shrewsbury. Managing director Claire Moore has been doing this job for 30 years and specialises in putting together bespoke luxury travel experiences.

She said: “The travel show is an extension of what we’re all about - using hand-picked, trusted travel partners from the world of cruise, touring and adventure. They are all independent tour operators and all of them have a little bit of something unusual about them. Whatever you’re thinking for your next holiday, collectively, we will be able to answer your questions. It’s a much richer experience than searching for holidays online.”

Last year’s event saw over 100 visitors through the door on the day (in spite of dreadful weather!), generating 86 enquiries.

“We had the best response we’ve had to any travel show ever,” Claire adds. “We’re really looking forward to bringing it back this October 15th.”

Nearly all of the operators coming to St Mary’s are part of AITO (Association of Independent Tour Operators) - The Specialist Travel Association, an association of unique, specialist UK travel companies, who pride themselves at putting customers first. All package holidays sold by AITO members have financial protection, to allow customers to travel in full confidence.

“Booking a holiday can be overwhelming - there are so many voices coming at you, but where is that honest voice?” Claire says.

“With AITO tour operators, of course you get expertise but also financial protection, which is massive - think of all those people who lost money during COVID who needn’t have - if they’d booked it in a financially protected way, it shouldn’t have happened.”

In the lovely surroundings of St Mary’s, you’ll be introduced to all kinds of new experiences, some of which might even surprise you.

Star Clippers (pictured top) invite you on board their teak-decked, luxurious ships to enjoy all the comforts of their sophisticated cabins and exquisite cuisine (and you don’t have to climb the rigging!). They even play a special anthem as you sail out of port! And because their ships are smaller than bigger cruise liners, you’ll visit much smaller coves.

Other operators can advise you about game drives in Zimbabwe, island escapes in Mozambique, touring, walking and biking holidays, or river cruising in Europe and much more. Specialist river cruise operators Uniworld and APT will be attending too.

“I did a river cruise last year and was blown away,” Claire said. “You unpack once and can literally leave your brain at home. You dock right in the middle of lovely towns and can wander out to a coffee shop, or Christmas markets, or join a walking tour. Some of them even have electric bikes on board.”

Peakes Travel Elite prides itself on high level customer service. Claire has just created a new luxury travel lounge at her Mardol HQ, to see customers by appointment, giving them more time with the experts and privacy away from the shop floor. She can connect customers with tour operators on video calls to answer their questions directly.

“Last year, we had a chap who had turned 50 and wanted to do something special, but didn’t want to go to a luxury 5* hotel,” Claire said. “We organised for him to go to Sri Lanka where he spent a few nights staying in an eco-friendly jungle lodge, then on to a luxury hotel with a pool, so the kids could splash about, then a short stay with a local family, followed by a dhow cruise through the Maldives.

“For someone who is struggling, putting their own holiday together, showing them the light and turning something very confusing into something wonderful is unbeatable. We allow our customers the safety and security of knowing that we’ve got it covered so you can relax and look forward to it.”

Peakes Travel Elite luxury travel showcase is on Sunday, October 15th from 10am to 2pm at St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury. To pre-register email or contact (01743) 233234.
