Visit Historic Open Gardens in Full Spring Colour

It's at this time of year, when gardens are in full spring colour, that the Shropshire Historic Churches Trust Open Gardens season gets into full swing! 

Here are a few to try this May & June - with more to follow at www.shropshirehct.org.uk

The Leasowes garden in Shropshire

Sunday, MAY 1st

Open Gardens at The Leasowes, Cound, Shrewsbury SY5 6AF (pictured above) - a wonderful 10 acre garden in full spring colour with Rhododendrons and Azaleas in bloom, beautifully planted borders and an arboretum with unusual trees set in a valley connected to a series of five small lakes.Teas, unsuitable for wheelchairs, WC. 9.30am - 5pm. Entry £5, dogs on leads welcome.

The Citadel Open Gardens

Wednesday, MAY 11th

Open Gardens at The Citadel, Weston under Redcastle, Shrewsbury, SY4 5JY (pictured above and below) - a riot of wonderful colour! Rhododendrons, Azaleas  and Acers abound beneath a canopy of mature trees. Walled potager. Victorian thatched summerhouse with views to the Welsh mountains. Teas, plant sales, wheelchairs…parts suitable, WC. 2pm-5.30pm. Entry £5, sorry, no dogs.

More Open Gardens...

May 15 - Arvon Centre (The Hurst), Clunton - SY7 0JA, 2-5pm. Playwright John Osborne's former home, set in 26 acres of South Shropshire AONB with stunning views of the Clun Valley. Gardens include bluebell woods, magnificent Coast Redwoods, 10th century dovecote, heritage orchard, meadows, saw mill pond, 19th century kitchen garden and extensive Rhododendron and Azalea walk. Children welcome. Teas, WC. Entry £6. 

May 22 - Pontesbury Garden Trail - SY5 0YH, 12.30pm to 4pm. A selection of gardens open through the village, including great views and historical interest. Start from St George's Church, where maps can be purchased. Teas, WC in the church and village. Sorry, no dogs. Entry £5. 

May 29 - Stokesay Court, Onibury SY7 9BD, 2-5pm. Enjoy these 20-acre grounds laid out in 1892 by EH Milner, including a lake, fountain and grotto, fine Rhododendrons, arboretum, pools and cascades, woodland walks and the remains of Victorian plant houses. Teas in the shepherd's hut. Entry £5. 

June 12 - Westwood House, Bridgnorth, WV16 SLP, 2-5pm. A country garden with roses veg garden, woodland walks. Teas, WC. Entry £5. 

June 18 & 19 - Clunbury Garden Trail, Clunbury - SY7 0HE, 12 noon to 5pm. Nestled under Clunbury Hill, this is an interesting trail of a variety of small and large gardens, with their own particular charm, all within 1/2 mile of the village. Purslow Hall will be open and offers fine views and a spectacular garden with woodland walk and good parking. Teas, WC. Entry £5.

June 26 - Cleobury Mortimer Garden Trail - DY14 8RA, 12 noon to 4pm. A variety of urban and rural gardens in this picturesque market town. Starting from St Mary's Church in the town centre. Teas, WC. Entry £5. Sorry, no dogs.

May 16th - 20th and June 13th - 17th 

A Wellington Garden, Telford Road - TF1 2EN
Open for two weeks only! A charming little garden where every space, both horizontal and vertical is planted up with a gardening skill and imagination!
Beautiful planting, flowers, cool green areas, a variety of levels, corners filled with planted pots and  a choice of cosy sitting-out areas. Entry £10 to include a proper afternoon tea and the garden to yourself. Sadly unsuitable for wheelchairs, no dogs, WC. Maximum of six. Contact: s.james311@icloud.com

Chirbury Garden

May, June and July 

Homeleigh, Chirbury - SY15 6UD

A wild and romantic garden grown for scent and wildlife (pictured above) - a variety climbers tumble from apple boughs covered in blossom, roses are a favourite, narrow paths wend their way through  borders massed with shrubs and colour, the resident parrot may say something and hopefully polite! This garden is not manicured but just delightful in a wonderfully wild way. Entry £7.50 to include tea and cake under the trees and the garden to yourselves.
