What's On in Shrewsbury this Weekend? June 29th - July 2nd

It's the official launch of the Shrewsbury Arts Trail this weekend, with a host of exhibitions to feast the eyes on - plus Late Night at the Market Hall and dancing in The Square and much more!

The Shrewsbury Arts Trail

The town's fabulous summer Arts Trail officially launches this weekend (July 1) with a raft of exhibitions across multiple venues. Don’t miss the major special Summer Exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery with works by Banksy, Damien Hirst, LS Lowry, Salvador Dali, Halima Cassell, Ian Rayer-Smith, Andrew Logan, Jacob Chandler and many more. 

Further exhibitions of work by local artists and schoolchildren on the festival theme of ‘Movement’ will be held throughout July and August in Theatre Severn and The Parade Shops and at the museum. Read our featured blog HERE

And of course, there's the Shrewsbury Arts Trail Sculpture Trail already on show - at the castle, the museum and in The Dingle with works by Salvador Dali and Jacob Chandler. 

Movement Art Exhibition - The Gateway Gallery, July 1 - 31

George Sfougaras, a contemporary British Greek artist who works and exhibits internationally in collaboration with a network of partners, will be showing a large selection of his work at The Gateway Gallery during the Shrewsbury Arts Trail. The exhibition also features 3D pieces by Stefan Chabluk, with a preview event on Thursday, June 29 from 7pm. Read our blog on this exhibition HERE

Comic Art Exhibition - MRS JONES Art Shop & Gallery, Belle Vue. 

‘A Master Craft’ features work of internationally renowned comic book illustrators including Charlie Adlard, Dan Berry, Mike Perkins and more. These are the artists behind some of the best loved superheroes and villains from comic book greats including The Walking Dead, Superman, Captain America, Thor and the X-Men. Finishes July 1.

Beverley Fry - Solo Exhibition - The Darwin Gallery, Halls showrooms, Battlefield

This retrospective exhibition at Halls showrooms showcases the artist’s 40-year long career as a professional artist, and represents the full range of Fry’s oeuvre including her landscapes, still life studies and portraits. Finishes June 30.

‘Empathy of Form’ - The Morris Hall, Bellstone, Shrewsbury - Friday, June 30th - 3pm to 9pm

A one day exhibition at The Morris Hall (on Bellstone, opposite Shrewsbury Market Hall entrance), featuring local artists and curated by The Painting Mark. Sarah Drought produces beautiful landscapes in acrylics, oils and mixed media inspired by family walks in the countryside. Tricia Crowther creates subtle, muted abstract explorations of borders and edges: places that she has connected with. Susannah Phillips loves to work directly from life - with landscape painting that means carrying her studio around in a rucksack so she can capture moments en plein air

Bridget Greenwood is a contemporary abstract landscape painter based in Cheshire whose paintings explore her fascination with the landscape. For more information visit @thepaintingmark

Gill Stokes - Bear Steps Art Gallery, St Alkmonds Place (10am - 4pm)

Gill paints small intimate landscapes, or large dramatic views in oils - whether the awesome mountains of the Highlands or tiny secluded corners of forests. Finishes Sunday, July 9.

Shropshire Art Society 75th Anniversary Exhibition - St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Place

A fantastic opportunity to view a range of work in different styles from our county’s talented artists - in this most beautiful of settings. Finishes July 15.

Talk at Shrewsbury Castle - The Soldiers of Shropshire Museum, 7pm

Anthony Rich will talk about the Battle of Shrewsbury 1403, the first in which longbow faced longbow, and can be seen as the first blow in the dynastic struggle we now call the Wars of the Roses.For details visit HERE

Saturday, July 1st

Shrewbsury Morris dancers in action

Shrewsbury Morris - The Square, 10am-3pm

Enjoy a free day of dancing music and entertainment in The Square - meet Septimus the Giant Cobbler and enjoy performances from The Shrewsbury Lasses in their colourful dresses, the stick clashing Shrewsbury Bull & Pump Morris Men, intricate footwork from The Shrewsbury Cloggers and a special performance from Identity School of Dance. Expect continuous, colourful displays throughout the day and plenty of toe-tapping music!

The Hank Parade - The Parade, St Mary’s Place, 12pm - 9pm

Hank Marvin is doing a takeover of the outdoor space at The Parade - with its beautiful views over the River Severn. There’ll be street food, drinks & live music galore. 

Late night at the Market Hall

Late Night at Shrewsbury Market Hall - It’s another Late Night at our favourite indoor market - bars are open until 10pm, eateries until 9pm, some stalls until 7pm. A vibrant and funky atmosphere is always guaranteed! 

Brighouse & Rastrick Band - Theatre Severn, 7.30pm

‘Briggus’ as they are known, became National Champion Band of Great Britain in 2017 and are widely regarded as the best 'public subscription band' in the world. Catch their special concert tour whilst they’re in Shrewsbury, with the Tacoma Concert Band - the Pacific Northwest’s premier symphonic band. Tickets £15-£20. 

Sunday, July 2nd

Much Wenlock Garden Trail - Sunday July 2nd, 12-5pm

There’s another Open Gardens event in Much Wenlock this Sunday in aid of Shropshire Historic Churches Trust with a chance to see the gardens of Wenlock Abbey House (not usually open to the public).

Coming Up

Broadway musical The Full Monty comes to Theatre Severn (with Get Your Wigle On, July 5-8) and Tommy Cooper is in town (July 8, Walker Theatre). The Square will be busy next weekend with a Farmer’s Market (July 7) and the Made in Shropshire Summer Fair (July 8). 

Get tickets early for the Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra at the castle (Weds, July 12) as this is usually a sellout!
