Your guide to Shrewsbury's Festive Events this December

This December, Shrewsbury residents are fortunate enough to have a calendar jam-packed with  Christmassy events. But with so much going on, how can you ever keep track of what’s when and where?

Fear not - MyShrewsbury Magazine has you covered. We’ve searched, researched and compiled a list of the best festive events Shrewsbury has to offer. Whether you’re after a Christmas market to aid your shopping, a group event to belt out some carols, or something for the little ones to get involved in - there’s a wealth of options to choose from.


Christmas Markets

Shrewsbury Prison Christmas Market

When: Saturday 11th December

Where: Shrewsbury Prison

A traditional-style market, including over 50 stalls offering gifts, crafts, clothing,
games, toys, and street food, all set inside the unique interior of Shrewsbury Prison.
Tickets are completely free, though must be booked in advance via Shrewsbury
Prison’s website. The market runs from 10am until 4pm.
Tickets sold out early but the Prison suggests keeping an eye on its social media
Extra tickets may soon be added!

Shrewsbury Farmers Market

When: Friday 3rd December

Where: Shrewsbury Town Square

The traditional market which is held monthly in the town square, usually on the
first Friday of the month between 9am and 3.30pm. You'll find a wide variety of
fabulous local producers, and it's a great place to stock up for the weekend - or
for Christmas day! From hog roasts and hand made chocolates to cheese,
pastries, jams and preserves, and street food to grab and go.

Winter Warmer Wednesdays

Every Wednesday up until Christmas (1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd)

Shrewsbury Market Hall

Shrewsbury Market Hall is hosting a series of late night shopping events to bring
some seasonal sparkle, festive cheer and merry warmth to wintry evenings in the
run up to Christmas. Every Wednesday up to Christmas, from November 24, the
Market Hall will open late (until 8pm) for festive shopping, food and drink.

Chronicle Christmas Market

When: Friday 17th & Saturday 18th December

Where: Shrewsbury Town Square

The third weekend of December will see an array of locally produced food, mulled
wine and mince pies available at the Chronicle Christmas Market in Shrewsbury
Town Square. The perfect opportunity to catch up on your Christmas shopping too!
The market runs from 9am until 6pm, though we recommend getting down early to
grab the best goods before they go!

Carol Events

Doorstep Carols

When: Wednesday 15th December, 6pm

Where: Your doorstep!

Join in with this year’s nationwide event as households across the country sing carols
from their doorsteps at 6pm on Wednesday 15th December. Shrewsbury residents
should feel especially involved given the phenomenon started here last year!
Tell all your friends and neighbours and help get this going where you live.

Carols in the Square

When: Wednesday 15th December, 6pm

Where: Shrewsbury Town Square

Dubbed the ‘epicentre’ of this year’s Doorstep Carols event, Shrewsbury Town Square
will host a sing-a-long to this years carols, hosted by BBC Radio Shropshire's Adam Green and Clare Ashford.
Make your way down to the square for the perfect way to get into the
Christmas spirit, all whilst belting out some Christmas cheer with friends and family.

Lingen Davies Carol Concert

When: Saturday 11th December, 6pm

Where: Shrewsbury Abbey

The Lingen Davies Cancer Fund’s Christmas Concert promises a warm Christmas feel
accompanied by Shrewsbury Abbey’s incredible acoustics. Featuring the Telfordaires,
Shrewsbury Light Orchestra and Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir, expect a wonderful
display of talent which is sure to get you into the festive spirit. Tickets, available here,
are £12 for adults and £10 for concessions (12 and under or over 60), whilst children
under 5 can attend for free.
Town Centre Carol Concert

When: Monday 20th December, 6.15pm

Where: St Alkmund’s Church

Enjoy a carol service right in the heart of Shrewsbury Town, at St Alkmund’s Church.
Including mulled wine and mince pies - all are welcome!

Spirit of Christmas

When: Saturday 4th December, 7.30pm

Where: Shrewsbury Abbey

Wynne Evans - the GoCompare opera singer will be performing at Shrewsbury Abbey,
alongside Meole Brace Chamber Orchestra, Shrewsbury Carol and Shrewsbury Abbey
Choir. The evening promises to be a brilliant show of musical talent, all set inside the
adorned interior of Shrewsbury Abbey. Tickets for children are £5, Adults £20 or £45
for a family of four - grab them here.

Shrewsbury Cathedral Concert

When: Friday 17th December, 7pm

Where: Shrewsbury Cathedral

A beautiful Christmas Concert in the spectacular surrounds of Shrewsbury Cathedral,
featuring The Cathedral Choir & guests, singing works by Saint-Saëns & Fauré. The
evening begins with a three course pre-concert dinner in the Orchard Cafe on Town
Walls. Tickets are available here, and include an option for the concert only (£12), or
concert plus dinner (£25).

Splinters of Heaven

When: Wednesday 15th December, 5-10pm

Where: St Mary’s Church Shrewsbury

For anyone who has never seen this jaw-droppingly beautiful light show from Andy
McKeown, you’re in for a treat. An international light artist, Andy projects images of
the 16th century glass windows onto the interior of St Mary's, which is lit from within
by thousands of projected shards of light, and the result is spellbinding - like a giant
kaleidoscope casting refracted images across the Nave. Entry is free but donations
are welcome.

Wreath Making Workshop

When: Thursday 2nd December, 6.30pm

Where: Hickory’s Smokehouse

Join Hickory's Smokehouse and Mollie from Blossom & Bloom for an incredible wreath
making masterclass, on Thursday 2nd December at 6:30pm. The class is 2 hours and
includes a glass of prosecco, BBQ nibbles, and all the materials you for your very own
wreath, plus expert tuition from Mollie. To book your place call 01743 299757 - you'll
just need to pay in full to reserve your space.

St Chad’s Christmas Tree Festival 

When: Sunday 5th December - Monday 3rd January

Where: St Chad’s Church

St Chad's Church will be ablaze with twinkling lights this December, when a host of
Christmas trees fill its interior to mark the start of their annual Christmas Tree Festival.
There will also be an on-going and diverse daily programme of Christmas music, song
and dance. Admission is free and starts on 5th December, running daily until 3rd January.

For Little Ones

Santa's Grotto

When: Selected Dates, starting Wednesday 1st December

Where: Darwin Centre

With Christmas comes Santa - and he's agreed to a meet and greet in the Darwin centre
at selected dates this December! A full list of dates can be found here. Tickets are free,
but must be booked in advance, and one ticket admits a family of 4 (book them here).
Organisers ask for a small donation of £4 per family to support their official charity partner
Shrewsbury Town in the Community.

Crib Service

When: Friday 24th December, 3pm-7pm

Where: Shrewsbury Abbey

Shrewsbury Abbey is putting on a special Christmas service for Children, giving them the
chance to experience the nativity story up-close. It'll be followed by nine lessons and carols,
and will run from 3pm to 7pm .
